5 Essential Tips for Maintaining Your Irrigation System

Maintaining a beautiful and healthy lawn requires more than just regular watering. An efficient irrigation system is essential to keep your property lush and green all year round. However, irrigation systems can be complex and require proper maintenance to function optimally. Here we will provide five essential tips for maintaining your irrigation system.

1. Regular Inspections

Inspect your irrigation system regularly, at least once a month, to ensure it functions properly. Check for leaks, damaged sprinkler heads, clogged nozzles, and other system performance issues. Repair or replace any damaged parts as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your lawn and the design.

2. Adjust Sprinkler Heads

Ensure your sprinkler heads are adjusted properly to avoid watering non-target areas like driveways and sidewalks. Make sure that the spray is reaching the targeted areas and not over-spraying.

3. Follow the Watering Schedule

Follow a watering schedule appropriate for your lawn type and the current weather conditions. Watering too much or too little can cause damage to your lawn and wastewater. Consider installing a rain sensor that will turn off the system when it rains.

4. Clean Irrigation System Components

Clean the irrigation system components regularly to prevent clogging and ensure optimal performance. Flush out the system’s pipes and valves to remove any debris that may cause blockages.

5. Hire a Professional

Hire a professional landscaping company to maintain and inspect your irrigation system regularly. A professional will have the necessary expertise and tools to identify and address any issues that may arise.

Maintaining your irrigation system is essential to keep your lawn looking healthy and beautiful. Regular inspection, proper adjustments, following a watering schedule, cleaning the system components, and hiring a professional are all critical to optimising your irrigation system. By following these five essential tips, you can keep your irrigation system in top condition and enjoy a healthy and vibrant lawn all year round.

A fence is a great way to create a sense of privacy in your yard. Depending on the style and height of the fence, you can create a private area where you and your family can relax without the worry of prying eyes.

Fences can also act as a sound barrier, blocking out noise from the street and other homes. This can be a great way to reduce distractions and ensure that your outdoor area is a peaceful and tranquil space.

The ABCs of Swimming Pool Maintenance

Having a swimming pool sounds like all fun and games until you have one. They require maintenance, and failure to keep up with yours comes at the cost of gallons of wasted water and significantly impacted durability. With a little planning, you can take control and enjoy your pool to the fullest.

Swimming Pool Anatomy 101

A pool is more than just a container of water. There are four primary components you need to be concerned with to devise a well-rounded maintenance plan. Whether your pool is above or below ground, they are as follows:

  • 1. Water- critical to keep clean to prevent dangerous contamination, mineral buildup and rust
  • 2. Liner- keeps water contained, making it necessary to keep free of algae and mold
  • 3. Filter- continually cleans water much like the liver cleans blood, your pool’s primary defense against cloudiness, dirt and contamination
  • 4. Skimmer and main drain- keeps water flowing to and from the filter, a must in keeping water clean and preventing cloudiness

The Four C’s of Maximum Pool Durability

To ensure the big four components of your pool are properly maintained, it’s important you’re familiar with the big four C’s and work them into your pool maintenance plan.

1. Chemical Balance

You don’t have to be a scientist to maintain the proper chemical balance in your pool, but you do need to get it right. There are four elements that must be included on your maintenance schedule:

  • Regular pH checks- maintain a level between 7.4-7.6.
  • Regular shock treatments- perform after sundown to avoid UV rays and with pump running to ensure proper circulation.
  • Regular alkalinity checks- maintain a level between 100-150 parts per million.
  • Regular chlorine checks- amounts vary depending on pool size.

2. Cleaning

At least once per week, set aside time to clean your pool. There are three main tasks that need your consistent attention.

  • Skimming debris like leaves- you can do it manually or purchase an automatic skimmer that does the work for you. Just make sure you empty it as instructed.
  • Brushing- this removes dirt and prevents the spread of algae. Don’t forget accessories like slides and ladders.
  • Vacuuming- once large debris is removed and surfaces are scrubbed of dirt and grime, vacuuming is the finishing touch that’ll leave it sparkling clean.

When you clean, employ these three steps on a regular basis. It shouldn’t take much more than an hour per week to adequately clean an average pool.

3. Circulation Maintenance

When your pool water sits, carbon dioxide slowly dissolves into it, throwing off the pH level. After several days, microbes make their way into your stagnate water which opens you up to algae and unpleasant smells. You might as well swim in a pond! To ensure regular circulation, you need to give your pump some love by following these two tips:

  • Keep pump running at least 10 hours per day.
  • Periodically reverse water flow through the filter to remove any buildup.

4. Consistency

Consistency is key in keeping your pool properly maintained. While there are several components involved, it’s not as intimidating as it may seem when you break it down into smaller tasks. The key is to create a schedule you can adhere to. For example, you could dedicate time on Monday evening to check chemicals, do you cleaning on Wednesdays and remove buildup in your pump Friday.

A pool is a place to stay cool, create memories and have fun with the ones you love the most. Make the most of yours by following these tips and sticking to it! If you’re in need of a swimming pool installation in the Newburgh or Evansville Indiana area, please check out what we have to offer.

Lawns Through the Ages

Your lawn is the first thing people see when they enter your driveway, and homeowners take great measures to ensure theirs are both healthy and aesthetically appealing. However, few know the history of the lawn and how it transformed over time.

Lowdown on Lawn History

Europe is known for its mild climate and open grasslands, so it’s no surprise that this is where it seems the lawn originated. During the Renaissance period, land cultivated with chamomile and thyme signified a high status quo among the French and English elite, and these components still provide an excellent alternative to grass in modern times.

In the 1600’s, the emergence of the closely shorn grass emerged. While much of this work was performed by sheep and other grazing animals, the wealthy began to take more interest in the aesthetics of their lawn and hired people to perform this grueling labor.

The Cultivation of North America

When immigrating to the New World, Europeans brought grass seeds with them. As in Europe, only the upper-class citizens of these early days had the time and resources to manicure their lawns.

Bowling in Canada created popularity in the cultivation of turf once they peacefully gained independence from Britain in the 1860’s, and this required flat stretches of mowed grasses. When Scottish immigration increased to the United States in the 1800’s, this practice followed.

Industrialization and the Modern Lawn

Industrialization in the mid-1800’s brought on the concept of parks in order to beautify urban areas. Frederick Law Olmstead, also known as the American father of landscape architecture, planned Central Park in New York City, and he was credited for designing suburbs where residential homes featured a manicured lawn of their very own. Edwin Budding helped promote this new idea by inventing the first lawnmower in 1830, thus making it possible for even the middle and lower class to manicure their lawns.
